Immortalizing a Memory

by Anita Sandler

Sue Westin, co-owner of the Gallery On The Marsh in Dorset with her artist-naturalist husband John Pitcher, started her love affair with art and painting as a result of her passionate love of Nature. Mastering a quality of line and brush stroke, with her experienced eye and humanistic insight, she built a successful career with her paintings of the natural world and of animals, winning numerous awards and honors, representation in galleries and museums, and exhibitions all over the world.

It wasn’t until people who loved and collected her work started asking her to do portraits that Westin decided to specialize in one moment of a person’s life....and in the case of a bridal portrait, to capture a women at her “... moment of beauty”...in a place of beauty. Vermont is Westin’s special place, and is a part of the inspiration that guides her daily. It has become a calling for Westin to communicate “a frame of time...a memory of time and place” with her practiced brush, her eye for beauty and her love of Vermont. She believes that the lasting value and integrity of a painting immortalizes that special moment and, rather than an album that would be stored or tucked away, can be appreciated for generations.
